My summer bucket list (& a collab!)

I am officially OUT OF SCHOOL. Which can only mean one thing…. SUMMMMMMER!

To start these glorious three months off strong, Em at Two Girls Two Mountains and I are doing a collab on summer bucket lists! I’m posting mine a few days before hers, so if you’re reading this during the gap, here’s some other posts she’s written: photoshoot tips, songs to dance to, and life changing books.) As soon as she unleashes hers onto the internet, I will link it here.

1. Watch the new movies that are coming out

Incredibles 2: June 15 (trailer)

The-Incredibles-2-release-date

I actually don’t think I’ve fully seen the first Incredibles movie (and I’m pretty sure I didn’t like what I did see), BUT I still want to watch the second one because of two reasons:
1) I remember not liking Monsters, Inc. from when I was little, but I watched it again on the bus during a school trip last year and it was good. Which means that my younger self’s opinion on movies might not be the most reliable.
2) The origin story of Incredibles is a cool one. I learned about it from the awesome book, Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong.
Here’s some backstory for the backstory of Incredibles– Pixar was on a roll with a bunch of huge movies, but Steve Jobs and his people were all nervous that they were going to fall off the roll. So they hired a new guy named Brad Bird who decided the best way to help them keep their balance was to shake things up. Here’s a shortened version from Barking on what happened next:

Bird revealed his plan to address the creativity crisis: “Give us the black sheep. I want artists who are frustrated. I want the ones who have another way of doing things that nobody’s listening to.”
Bird’s new “Dirty Dozen” of animation didn’t just make a film differently. They changed the way the entire studio worked:
“We gave the black sheep a chance to prove their theories, and we changed the way a number of things are done here. We did a movie that had three times the number of sets and had everything that was hard to do.”
That project was The Incredibles. It grossed over $600 million and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Ant-man and the Wasp: July 6 (trailer)

AntManAndTheWasp5ae0af7e8ab5a.0

Um well so, I haven’t the watched the first Ant-man either… but hopefully I will have by the time it comes out.
(Sidenote: Paul Rudd, the actor who plays Ant-man, was also the step-brother guy in Clueless. Isn’t that weird??)

Eighth Grade: July 13 (trailer)

Eighth Grade - Still 1

Crazy Rich Asians: August 15 (trailer) (the book it’s based on)

crazy_rich_asians_constance_wu_1524264444.1524519689

Haha, there’s going to be so many Asians going to watch Crazy Rich Asians.

2. Get comfortable maneuvering an incredible but potentially dangerous invention

In other words, take driver’s ed and get my permit.

3. Try kdrama (AKA Korean drama) and anime

Goblin-e1483643769654

The kdrama I’m going to watch (more like read-watch with all the subtitles that are going to be happening) is called Tempted, and the anime (wait, is it an anime show? series? both of them sound awkward) show/series is called My Hero Academia. The plan for the kdrama is that my friends and I will buddy watch it, and the plan for the anime show is that I’m going to watch it and then update one of them who is already on season 2 with all my thoughts.

I’m more excited about being able to talk about episodes afterwards with them than watching the specific shows. After listening to people at school talk about Friends and The Office and Stranger Things, watching the same TV show as someone else seems to be a very bonding experience. Oh my, I hope they don’t read this, they’re going to think I’m being so cheesy. Also, I sound like that high school narrator in books who talks about his/her peers like they’re scientific specimens he/she observes.

4. Spend a lot of time in the kitchen with my mom

AKA LEARN HOW TO COOK. And how to interact with food related stuff in general- grocery shopping, knives (agh I don’t like knives they make me nervous). For example, I’ve been practicing peeling oranges with a knife.

Let’s just say this goal is a major work in progress.

5. Hang out with people from school

I’m not good at hanging out with people from school during the summer. Usually, on the last day of school, I say bye to all my classmates and then say hello to them for the first time in three months on the first day of school. BUT THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT.

Specific ideas:
– go watch the movies above
– have a photoshoot (I’m excited about this one)
– go swimming
– play board games (One time at youth group, it was a free night, so we were just hanging out when somebody pulled out CandyLand. If you’ve forgotten how to play CandyLand or if you’ve never played, it’s basically the simplest game to be invented- the box said it’s okay for THREE year olds to play it. But it was awesome and I had so much fun.)
– go to an escape room

6. Research homelessness in America

It started when my dad and I were talking about the recent school shooting at Sante Fe High School. The news had upset him, I could tell. As for me, I knew in my head that it was sad, but I didn’t feel sad. This happens every time I hear that another school shooting has happened.

Something that does make me feel sad is seeing people on the streets with cardboard signs. That’s why I don’t like visiting New York. One time when I went for a few days, it just hurt to be there. When I told him that, he told me that seeing homeless people doesn’t make him sad because he believes that here in America, most people can get a job if they tried to and many of the people living are the streets are just lazy.

I said I disagreed. I didn’t have the information- I’ve never seen the data, the hard numbers and facts and first hand accounts. I didn’t want to make my decision before doing the research.

So here we are.

Some questions I want to get answers too:
– What are the major and minor reasons people become homeless?
– What is the process like for people who are homeless to become not homeless?
– What are the best ways for me to help them?
– What is life like on a daily basis if you are homeless?

7. Clean my room

These past few days I’ve been getting the itch to clean out anything and everything. It’s a feeling that only happens to me once or twice a year, so when it does, I always go all out. If I had to make a prediction, I would say that for a good part of this weekend, my bedroom and study room are going to be in a state of disorder.

Sidenote: dramatic cleaning is a perfect example of the quote, “it always gets worse before it gets better.”

8. Interview my parents

I want to do this for a number of reasons.
1) My parents have an awesome story. I’m talking awesome awesome. Like, AWESOME awesome awesome.
2) Here’s another fact from the Barking book that I mentioned at the very beginning of this post.
“What’s the best predictor of your child’s emotional well-being? It’s not great schools, hugs, or Pixar movie. Researchers at Emory University found that whether a kid knew their family history was the number-one indicator.”
3) I want to be able to tell my kids these stories.
4) It’ll be fun and funny and interesting. And it’s cool to hear the stories from two points of view- my mom and my dad almost always remember stuff differently.

9. Stock up on blog posts

The best piece of advice I read and didn’t follow before starting this blog was to have twenty posts already written before launching. In retrospect, it would’ve been nice, but I was too pumped to wait that long. But, I’m taking the advice to heart now. Hopefully this way when school starts, I’ll be able to post on the same day each week instead of jumping all around.

More ideas for your summer bucket list:

Em’s bucket list!!! Which will be linked HERE.
– Finish a wreck-this-journal
– Take advantage of the free month Skillshare offers and take a million classes
– Write someone a snail mail letter (I strongly recommend this: getting one back in the mail is like Christmas morning)
– Do Camp NaNoWriMo
– Try geocaching
– Make something:
1. s’mores at home (I LOVE S’mores. Whoever invented them is a genius.)
2. origami bowtie (I found out about these when a student gave one to an art teacher that’s leaving- they’re so cool.)
3. pop up card (also very cool)

ps

If something in this post made you go ‘cool, I want to do that this summer,’ raise your hand in the comments!
Specific ideas for what to do while ‘hanging out’? Dude, I think hanging out is harder than it sounds, especially when it’s at your house. I’m pretty sensitive to whether or not people are bored, which is a feeling that multiplies when I’m the ‘hostess’. Sometimes I also get tired of being ‘on’ in the middle of having people over, but unfortunately, I still haven’t found a nice way of kicking people out with the excuse that I need to get back to that really good book I’m reading.
Have you taken driver’s ed yet?
Some of my friends took it last summer while they were fourteen so they could get their license ASAP. It’s weird thinking that my classmates are going to be out on the road.
What’s on your summer bucket list?

  1. This was such a fun post to read! You summer bucket list is a lot different to mine, I think it’s so interesting seeing what different people want to achieve and do with their time. I love that you want to learn more about homelessness, that’s a really great thing to be curious about. I hope you have the most wonderful summer 🙂

    1. Thank you! I know right? I think it’s so interesting too- especially since it’s summer and people theoretically have more control over their schedule. What are some things on your bucket list? (Me being curious.) Why thank you, that’s very kind of you to say. You too!

  2. I love this list! I also need to work on driving this summer- I have my permit, but let’s just say I am not the best driver ever yet. XD

Also- WHOA. I’m not allowed to say where I live for obvious reasons, but WAIT I THINK WE LIVE REALLY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER and I screeched when I saw that you said Dallas was your city (or at least the nearest big city). Cause…same here. :0 And out of everywhere in the entire country, that’s pretty darn cool. The Sixth Floor Museum is the coolest place ever! It was really sad, but really educational and interesting.

As for suggestions for hanging out…maybe play a board game or Wii or something? Or go somewhere to eat, like a snowcone place.

    1. Thank you!! Hahaha okay, got it.

WAIT NO WAY ARE YOU SERIOUS, wowww. Oh my goodness, that’s insane. Okay, thanks for telling me! I’m even more pumped to go now.

Oh, Wii! I haven’t played that in so long, that’s a very good idea. Haha, I actually strongly prefer ice-cream to snowcones- snowcones are just like, flavored ice??

      1. You’re welcome!!

I AM SERIOUS. And I hope you get to go; it’s a really neat experience!

Wow, that is very true. I actually agree with the ice cream preference, so I’m not sure why I suggested snowcones over ice cream- I guess cause it’s summer and all the snowcone stands just opened. XD

  3. Ah, I remember Candy Land. Fond memories. Sometimes its fun to play games that you’re supposedly “too old” for. Once I was with a group of friends and we spent and hour playing Duck Duck Goose, except that instead of saying “Duck Duck Goose” everyone would make up something when it was their turn like “Tomato Tomato Ketchup” or “Gollum Gollum Smeagol”. It was surprisingly fun.
I’m kind of the same way with cleaning. I don’t do it at all for months and then out of no where I decide to spend four hours sorting through the junk under my bed.
Yay! Bookstores! I love visiting bookstores I’ve never been to before. It’s so lovely and exciting 🙂

    1. Exactly! Who says pretend and Legos and stuffed animals are only for little kids? Hahaha, that’s an amazing memory. It could be called “Duck Duck Goose- but not really”!
Oh, cool! I think this is how Spring Cleaning came to be. A bunch of people all realized that they liked to dramatically clean and said to each other, ‘hey, let’s give this a name and make it a thing.’
BOOKSTORES. Yep, visiting them is the best.

  4. This is a great Summer bucket list! It’s got both leisure and ambitious sounding projects, which is a good combination. I tend to just make a list of all the movies and books I want to consume for the summer and just go with that. Also I keep adding “Get a job” to that list and then screaming internally. I don’t do well with…um…anything in the real world. Though I did get my driver’s license! I didn’t take driver’s ed, because my dad taught me how to drive. But I lived, and thus far I haven’t killed anyone with a car, so I guess I am doing pretty well.
I think your research project about homelessness sounds really interesting! Once you have some findings you could write some blog posts about it. I would read that!
The Incredibles is one of my favorite Pixar movies, along with Monsters Inc. and A Bug’s Life. You should give it another chance before watching the sequel! I didn’t know about the whole history behind it, that is really cool! It makes sense to me though.
Oh my, I had zero posts in reserve when I first started my blog. That sounds like it might have been a good idea. Such a naive young blogger I was then.
Sometimes when I hang out with my friends we make music videos. Not very often, but we have made some spectacular Veggie Tales music videos of the highest quality. It can be a blast. Also if your friends like writing, there is this really fun game where you each start a random story, write for around three minutes, and then pass the story along to the person next to you. Then you all write for three minutes again, and pass it again. This continues until you fill the page, but the best part is that you can only read the part written by the person directly before you, so the stories get pretty wacky. I don’t know if that made any sense. But anyway. It can be fun. And of course there are always board games, but I think you mentioned that. And movies! And talking about movies/books/Other Interesting Things.
One thing that my summer bucket list includes at the moment is finishing a massive Letter Game that my sister, my friend, and I have been working on for like…five years. We all have a number of fictional characters who write letters to each other, so it’s basically a story told entirely through letters. Letter games are pretty fun, but they are usually only about ten letters long and last a day or two. This one is unusually long.
    …This comment is unusually long.
Great post, and good luck on your Summer bucket list!

    1. Why thank you, I didn’t even realize I did that. Hahaha, to be consumed movies and books lists are amazing too. Getting a job! That’s something I want to do next year. Yea right, I don’t believe you. I feel like most summer jobs just require a lot of standing and some talking. And you are very interesting to talk to! What I’m really trying to say is that I think you should go for it. :))
Oh, nice! Haha, I don’t think my dad would let me get my license without taking driver’s ed. He wouldn’t feel reassured enough about it. Also, he is not a good parker either. There’s no way I would be able to parallel park if he was my teacher. Yep, I agree- not killing anyone while driving is my standard too. And not driviing into the garage door/pole/mail box or something.
Oh my goodness, thank you! Wait, you would?? YES. Okay, got it, I 100% will be writing blog posts about what I learn.
I watched the beginning half of A Bug’s Life on a rest day in biology after we finished learning about insects- it was good! Yes, I agree, I should definitely give it another shot before the second one. I know! After hearing about the background, can you think back to things and be like, ‘oh yea, that was pretty different from the other movies.’
Haha, me either. I know, it’s a very good idea. I would recommend it to any person about to start a blog.
Ahh, that’s amazing!! Veggie Tales musice videos! (Now the theme song is going off in my head: veggie taaaales, veggie taaales, veggie taales, veggie tales, dununununununnunuh.) I know what you mean by the writing game! I think I’ve done that but only with a sentence at a time and with one other person. Writing for three minutes each round in a bigger group sounds more fun. Thank you for reminding me about this idea. I can’t wait to try it out and see what wacky stories come out. It’s kind of reminds me of telephone! Yep, talking about Other Interesting Things is my favorite part about hanging out with people.
Oh my goodness, that’s so cool! First of all, it includes writing letters (I love letters). Second of all, fictional characters! It’s like an extremely fun writing exercise. How do you know when the game is finished? Also, why do you want it to end??
I love unusually long comments. :))
      Thank you!!!

      1. Well, basically you know it’s “finished” the same way you know a book is finished: you feel pretty satisfied with the story arcs of your characters and depending on whether you want a happy ending or not, you have gotten said characters to either a good or terrible spot where you would be comfortable leaving them to go live out the rest of their lives without you. We already have “endings” figured out for some of the characters, it’s just a matter of getting them there. The reason we decided it’s time to end it is because we are all getting older (horror!) and life is getting too busy for us to keep it up. My biggest fear is that it will just grind to a stop without us choosing the ending. I want to consciously end it so that it can have a good ending so it’s not just this thing that went on for years and then just randomly stopped. I want it to stop for a reason. So that’s why. 🙂

  5. There are so many awesome things to do in Dallas! I spent a lot of growing up there, so I might be an expert 😂 JFK is one of my favs so anything to do with the assassination is just fascinating. Not sure if it still runs but there’s a JFK bus tour that is SO INTERESTING. You ride the same route as the motorcade and go to where the assassin lived and the theater where he hid out when the police caught him. Lee Harvey Oswald killed at least 1 police officer trying to get away, and going to that spot was chilling.

Also, if you haven’t gone to the Dallas Heritage Village, it’s really worth it! I volunteered there for a year and loved working in costume and talking about history. 😂

I am VERY excited for The Incredibles. Not so much about Antman because I just didn’t enjoy the first movie. And Crazy Rich Asians looks great!

    1. Haha, I know! It’s taken me a while, but I’m finally realizing that. Ooh, if you have any more expert recommendations, feel free to throw them my way. Whoa, there might a bus tour?? I didn’t know that, I’ll have to look that up. That does sound interesting. I feel like it would be one of those moments where it seems like you’re touching history. Do you remember if the bus goes to the spot where someone killed Lee Harvey Oswald? If I remember my eighth grade history stuff correctly, it was at a club. That somehow involved the word Rub.

Thank you so much for the recommendation! I will add that to my Yelp collection right now. Wow, that sounds like a very cool volunteering experience.

I’m excited for The Incredibles too! I think it’s a going to be good sequel. I’ve heard mixed reviews on Ant-man. I know, Crazy Rich Asians looks so good!
